Professor Paula Gerber has been a lawyer for over 25 years. She spent five years working as a solicitor in London, and five years as an attorney in Los Angeles before returning to Australia where she became a partner in a leading Melbourne law firm.
In 2000, Paula embarked on a major career change; moving from private practice to academia. She is a Professor at the Monash University Law School and a Deputy Director of the Castan Centre for Human Rights Law, the pre-eminent academic human rights centre in the Asia-Pacific region.
Professor Gerber is an internationally recognised expert in two disparate areas of law, namely construction law and human rights law. Within these two areas she has sub-specialisations in the rights of LGBTI people, children's rights, human rights education in schools, construction dispute resolution, and dispute avoidance processes.
Professor Gerber is the author of numerous books, book chapters and journal articles including, From Convention to Classroom: Paula Gerber The Long Road to Human Rights Education (2008) VDM Publishers, Germany and Paula Gerber & Adiva Sifris (eds) Current Trends in the Regulation of Same-sex Relationships (2010) Federation Press, Sydney.
In addition to her academic career, Paula has served on the Board of the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission, been President of Kaleidoscope Human Rights Foundation and been a sessional member of the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, in the Building List.
